1967 Cussac Encounter

1967 Cussac Encounter

Case Summary

On August 29, 1967, siblings François and Anne-Marie Delpeuch reported seeing four small, dark figures beside an intensely luminous sphere while tending cattle near Cussac in central France. They described the figures moving toward the object before it rose and departed. Early press coverage and subsequent investigations by GEPA and GEPAN made the case one of France's best-known humanoid encounter reports. The testimony is documented, but the nature of the figures and the object remains unresolved.

Overview

The Cussac encounter took place on the morning of August 29, 1967, on a rural plateau near the village of Cussac in the Cantal department of France. François Delpeuch, aged thirteen, and his nine-year-old sister Anne-Marie were tending the family's cattle when they reported seeing several small, dark figures near a brilliant spherical object across a road. The figures were initially described as resembling children at a distance, but appeared unusual as the siblings watched. Accounts collected by investigators describe some of the figures moving toward or entering the object's vicinity before the sphere rose and departed rapidly. The siblings also reported an unusual smell, and later investigative accounts discuss possible grass discoloration at the site. The details vary across early newspaper reporting, later interviews and specialist investigations, so the accounts should not be collapsed into one perfectly consistent narrative. The GEPA investigation by Joël Mesnard and Claude Pavy was published in 1968. GEPAN later revisited the case in a follow-up investigation, examining witness accounts, site details and possible conventional explanations. The case is notable for the two named witnesses and the history of follow-up inquiry, but there is no independently established physical evidence demonstrating that the object was extraterrestrial.
