On October 21, 1978, twenty-year-old pilot Frederick Valentich disappeared while flying a Cessna 182L, registration VH-DSJ, from Moorabbin Airport toward King Island across Bass Strait. During his final radio exchange with Melbourne Flight Service, he described an unidentified object with bright lights and a metallic appearance, then reported rough engine operation. Radio contact ended shortly afterward. Neither the pilot nor the aircraft was recovered, and the official investigation listed the cause as undetermined.
The disappearance of Frederick Valentich is one of Australia's best-known aviation cases associated with a reported UFO encounter. Valentich departed Moorabbin Airport in Victoria at 18:19 Eastern Standard Time on October 21, 1978, intending to fly to King Island and return. At approximately 19:06, he asked Melbourne Flight Service whether any aircraft were known to be below 5,000 feet. After being told there was no known traffic, he described what he initially thought might be a large aircraft, with four bright lights. During the exchange, he reported that the object had passed above him, described a long shape and a green light, and said it appeared to be orbiting overhead. His descriptions changed as the conversation continued. At 19:11:52, he reported that his engine was running roughly, idling and coughing. His final transmission was recorded at 19:12:28, followed by approximately seventeen seconds of open microphone. Subsequent calls received no reply. A search by air and sea failed to locate the aircraft or pilot. The official investigation recorded the cause as undetermined, presumed fatal. The case has generated theories involving misidentification, spatial disorientation, deliberate disappearance and UFO involvement, but none has been conclusively established. The radio transcript documents Valentich's report; it does not prove that the object he described was extraterrestrial or caused the aircraft's disappearance.
