On January 7, 1970, Finnish skiers Aarno Heinonen and Esko Viljo reported encountering a bright aerial phenomenon near Imjärvi, in southern Finland. They described a metallic, disc-shaped object surrounded by reddish-grey mist and a small humanoid figure associated with a beam of light. Heinonen later reported significant physical symptoms. The case was publicized in contemporary UFO literature and investigated by UFO researchers. The reported craft, humanoid, and associated physical effects have not been independently verified.
The Imjärvi encounter is one of Finland's best-known historical close-encounter reports. On the afternoon of January 7, 1970, Aarno Heinonen, a 36-year-old woodcutter, and Esko Viljo, a 38-year-old farmer, were cross-country skiing near Imjärvi, close to Heinola in southern Finland. Published accounts differ on the exact observation time, with some giving approximately 3:45 p.m. and others around 4:45 p.m. The men reportedly heard a buzzing sound and noticed a bright light approaching. They described a metallic, circular object, approximately three metres in diameter, surrounded by reddish-grey mist or a luminous cloud. The object allegedly descended to low altitude above the snowy ground. Accounts then describe a concentrated beam of light and a small humanoid figure, reportedly wearing green clothing and a distinctive head covering and carrying a box-like object. Details of the figure's appearance differed between the witnesses and across later retellings. The encounter was followed by reports of physical symptoms, particularly by Heinonen. The case attracted attention from Finnish and Swedish UFO researchers and was discussed in VIMANA and Flying Saucer Review. Later accounts also attributed further anomalous experiences to Heinonen, but those later stories should be separated from the initial encounter. The documentary record establishes that the witnesses' claims were published and investigated by UFO enthusiasts; it does not independently establish that an extraterrestrial craft or being was present, or that the reported health effects were caused by the encounter. Although the case is sometimes loosely labelled an abduction, the principal January 7 account does not establish that either skier was taken aboard the object.
