On October 24, 1967, Police Constable Roger Willey and his partner Clifford Waycott pursued a bright, cross-shaped UFO near Okehampton, Devon. The officers were driving along the A3072 when they spotted the object hovering at treetop height approximately 400 yards away.
The object emitted an intense brilliant white light and appeared to have a shape similar to a cross or compass points. Willey described it as having "points of light radiating from all angles," while Waycott noted it produced no sound. Despite the officers chasing the object for roughly 14 miles at speeds up to 80-90 mph, the UFO maintained its distance with "terrific" acceleration, effectively leading the patrol car without ever allowing them to catch up.
Both officers were convinced the object was controlled and aware of their presence, with Willey stating it was "definitely being controlled to view our car." The incident gained national attention, leading to an investigation by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and questions in Parliament. Although the MoD eventually classified the reports, they never provided a satisfactory explanation for the silent, low-altitude, high-speed object. Willey and Waycott remained steadfast in their account, with Willey later noting that "nobody can explain exactly what it was."
