Searchlights and Anti-Aircraft Guns Comb the Sky During the Los Angeles Air Raid

Type: Newspaper Article

Source: Los Angeles Times, February 26, 1942

Contemporary newspaper coverage of the Great Los Angeles Air Raid of February 25, 1942, when air-raid warnings, searchlights, and anti-aircraft batteries responded to reports of unidentified aircraft over Southern California.

The newspaper's coverage includes the famous searchlight photograph associated with the incident.

A later Los Angeles Times archival investigation found that the widely reproduced version of the image had been retouched for publication, with searchlight beams altered and other details modified.

The photograph is therefore valuable historical documentation of the anti-aircraft response, but it should not be treated as an unaltered photograph proving the appearance or physical characteristics of an unidentified craft.
